Africa Bush and Beach Holidays

The Expert Guide to Combining Bush and Beach Safaris for  2026-2027

A bush-and-beach holiday combines an East or Southern Africa wildlife safari — typically 5–8 nights — with 3–7 nights at a tropical beach destination. The most popular combinations in 2026–2027 pair Kenya’s Masai Mara or Tanzania’s Serengeti with Zanzibar, Seychelles, Mauritius, or Diani Beach. Packages start from USD 2,670 per person and can be fully tailored to any budget, group size, or travel date.

What Is a Bush and Beach Holiday?

A bush-and-beach holiday is a two-phase Africa trip: first, a wildlife safari in the savannah or bush, then a recovery period on a tropical coastline. The format exists because East and Southern Africa’s prime game reserves sit within a 1–3 hour flight of world-class Indian Ocean beach destinations, making the combination logistically seamless and extraordinarily varied.

Most clients spend 5–8 nights on safari — enough time to cover the Big Five, witness the Wildebeest Migration, or track gorillas — then transition to 4–7 nights on the beach. The safari provides dramatic, active experiences; the beach provides recovery, luxury, and romance. Together they represent the full range of what Africa offers.

Why Structure Your Africa Trip This Way?

  • Safari lodges involve 5:30 a.m. game drives, long distances, and high sensory stimulation. Beach time is recovery built into the itinerary, not an afterthought.
  • Flight connections between Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, or Arusha and island destinations like Zanzibar or Seychelles are short, direct, and frequent — no wasted transit days.
  • The cost efficiency is strong: combining two destination types in one trip eliminates the need for a separate holiday entirely.
  • For honeymoons and anniversaries, the format delivers both adventure and romance in a single itinerary.

The 5 Best Bush and Beach Combinations for 2026–2027

African Travel Hub has operated bush-and-beach packages for over a decade. Based on client feedback, wildlife reliability, flight logistics, and beach quality, these are the five strongest combinations currently available.

1. Masai Mara (Kenya) + Zanzibar (Tanzania)

The Masai Mara National Reserve in southwest Kenya consistently ranks as Africa’s premier game-viewing destination. Over 1.5 million wildebeest cross the Mara River between July and October in one of nature’s greatest spectacles. Year-round, the reserve supports lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and black rhino. Lodges like Angama Mara and &Beyond Bateleur Camp offer fly-in access from Nairobi Wilson Airport in 45 minutes.

Zanzibar Island, 25 minutes by air from Dar es Salaam, offers powder-white beaches on its north and east coasts (Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje) with water temperatures averaging 27°C year-round. Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, provides culture and history. The combination runs 10–14 days and starts from approximately USD 5,100 per person in mid-range accommodation.

2. Serengeti (Tanzania) + Zanzibar (Tanzania)

Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park covers 14,763 km² and hosts the full annual Wildebeest Migration circuit. Calving season runs December through March in the Southern Serengeti (Ndutu area); the river crossings peak in the northern Serengeti from July through October. After a 5–7 night Serengeti itinerary — often combined with a half-day at Ngorongoro Crater — clients fly to Zanzibar via Dar es Salaam or direct charter. This is African Travel Hub’s most popular Tanzania safari combination. 12-day packages start from USD 5,233 per person.

3. Masai Mara (Kenya) + Seychelles

The Seychelles archipelago, 115 granite and coral islands in the western Indian Ocean, is consistently rated among the world’s top luxury beach destinations. Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue offer beaches that rank globally in both beauty and seclusion. Anse Lazio on Praslin and Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue are perennially among the world’s most photographed beaches. Flights connect Nairobi to Mahé in approximately 3 hours via Kenya Airways. 12-day Masai Mara and Seychelles packages start from USD 5,105 per person.

4. Ngorongoro + Serengeti (Tanzania) + Mauritius

Mauritius offers a different Indian Ocean experience — a high-income destination with world-class hotels, water sports infrastructure, and a multicultural cuisine scene. The island sits 2 hours from Dar es Salaam by air. A Tanzania northern circuit safari (Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti) over 7–8 days, followed by 5 nights in Mauritius, is an excellent choice for clients who want a resort-style, high-comfort beach stay. 12-day packages including Ngorongoro and Mauritius start from USD 6,869 per person.

5. Samburu (Kenya) + Diani Beach (Kenya)

Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya offers unique dry-country species — reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx — found nowhere else in East Africa. It sits on the Ewaso Ng’iro River and pairs beautifully with Diani Beach on Kenya’s South Coast, 30 km south of Mombasa. Diani Beach is a 25 km stretch of fine white sand backed by dense coastal forest. The combination is entirely within Kenya, requires no international connection, and is the most affordable bush-and-beach option. 14-day Kenya safari and Diani Beach packages start from USD 3,769 per person.

How to Choose the Right Beach Destination

Zanzibar — Best for First-Timers and Value Seekers

Zanzibar is the most logistically convenient beach add-on to a Tanzania safari. Spice Island flights from Dar es Salaam or Arusha take 20–30 minutes. The north and east coasts (Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Matemwe) offer diverse beach settings and accommodation from budget guesthouses to five-star resorts. Best visited June through October and December through February to avoid the main rains (March–May). Stone Town adds a half-day of Swahili culture, spice markets, and UNESCO architecture.

Seychelles — Best for Luxury and Honeymoons

The Seychelles offers unmatched Indian Ocean luxury. Mahé is the main gateway; Praslin (45 mins from Mahé) hosts Anse Lazio and the Vallée de Mai UNESCO site where the iconic Coco de Mer palm grows. La Digue (15 mins from Praslin by ferry) is car-free and offers the world-famous Anse Source d’Argent beach. The Seychelles has no malaria, making it particularly suitable for families and those sensitive to prophylaxis requirements. High season is April–May and October–November; avoid the northwest monsoon (December–February on the west coast).

Mauritius — Best for Resort Comfort and Activities

Mauritius is a high-income island destination with a well-developed hospitality infrastructure. Luxury resort brands (Four Seasons, One&Only, Constance, Lux) cluster along the western and northern coasts. The island offers excellent kitesurfing (southeastern coast), deep-sea fishing, submarine excursions, and a diverse local cuisine. Best combined with Tanzania or southern Africa safaris as the flight path is most direct.

Diani Beach — Best Budget Option Within Kenya

Located 30 km south of Mombasa on Kenya’s South Coast, Diani Beach is a 25 km palm-fringed beach with calm, shallow lagoon waters. Colobus monkey colonies inhabit the coastal forest immediately behind the beach. It connects easily with Amboseli, Tsavo, or the Masai Mara, and is the most affordable beach extension available — no additional international flights required. A daily flight connects Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to Ukunda Airstrip (Diani) in under 1 hour.

When to Travel: Best Timing for Bush and Beach

The two components of a bush-and-beach holiday have overlapping optimal seasons, but careful timing maximises both experiences.

July to October — The Peak Season

This is the best window for a combined holiday. Kenya’s Masai Mara sees the Wildebeest River Crossings at their peak (August–September). Tanzania’s northern Serengeti also hosts river crossings from July to October. Beach weather at Zanzibar, Seychelles (southeast coast), and Diani is excellent — dry, sunny, and breezy. This is the busiest and most expensive window; book accommodation at least 6–9 months in advance.

January to March — Calving Season + Summer Beaches

The Southern Serengeti (Ndutu area) hosts the Great Migration calving season, with hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves born between January and March. Predator activity is exceptionally high. Zanzibar and Diani enjoy their short dry season. Seychelles can be windy on exposed beaches but remains beautiful overall. This is a quieter, better-value window than July–October.

June — Shoulder Season Value

June marks the start of the long dry season across East Africa. Vegetation is beginning to thin, making game viewing cleaner. Zanzibar and Seychelles both transition out of the long rains. June offers excellent conditions at lower prices than peak July–September.
