Zanzibar Islands — Best for First-Timers and Value Seekers

Zanzibar is the most logistically convenient beach add-on to a Tanzania safari. Spice Island flights from Dar es Salaam or Arusha take 20–30 minutes. The north and east coasts (Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Matemwe) offer diverse beach settings and accommodation from budget guesthouses to five-star resorts. Best visited June through October and December through February to avoid the main rains (March–May). Stone Town adds a half-day of Swahili culture, spice markets, and UNESCO architecture.

Seychelles — Best for Luxury and Honeymoons

The Seychelles offers unmatched Indian Ocean luxury. Mahé is the main gateway; Praslin (45 mins from Mahé) hosts Anse Lazio and the Vallée de Mai UNESCO site where the iconic Coco de Mer palm grows. It connects easily with Amboseli, Tsavo, or the Masai Mara, and is the most affordable beach extension available — no additional international flights required. A daily flight connects Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to Ukunda Airstrip (Diani) in under 1 hour.

 

When to Travel: Best Timing for Safari  and Beach in Africa

The two components of a bush-and-beach holiday have overlapping optimal seasons, but careful timing maximises both experiences.

July to October — The Peak Season

This is the best window for a combined holiday. Kenya’s Masai Mara sees the Wildebeest River Crossings at their peak (August–September). Tanzania’s northern Serengeti also hosts river crossings from July to October. Beach weather at Zanzibar, Seychelles (southeast coast), and Diani is excellent — dry, sunny, and breezy. This is the busiest and most expensive window; book accommodation at least 6–9 months in advance.

January to March — Calving Season + Summer Beaches

The Southern Serengeti (Ndutu area) hosts the Great Migration calving season, with hundreds of thousands of wildebeest calves born between January and March. Predator activity is exceptionally high. Zanzibar and Diani enjoy their short dry season. Seychelles can be windy on exposed beaches but remains beautiful overall. This is a quieter, better-value window than July–October.

June — Shoulder Season Value

June marks the start of the long dry season across East Africa. Vegetation is beginning to thin, making game viewing cleaner. Zanzibar and Seychelles both transition out of the long rains. June offers excellent conditions at lower prices than peak July–September.
