East Africa Adventure Travel Tours and Safaris 2026-2027

Adventure Safaris Africa

Revised and Updated by African Travel Hub in April 2026

What Are East Africa Adventure Tours?

East Africa adventure tours combine wildlife safaris with high-intensity physical activities — mountain climbing, white-water rafting, horse-riding safaris, cycling expeditions, and canopy tours — across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda. These trips go beyond passive game-viewing: they put you inside the landscape, on foot, on horseback, or on the water, in some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on earth.

African Travel Hub (operated by Hallmark Travel Planners) designs fully customised East Africa adventure packages for 2026 and 2027, departing any date, for any group size, from solo travellers to families.

Top Adventure Activities in East Africa

  1. Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing — Tanzania

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak at 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain. It sits in northern Tanzania, 330 km south of Nairobi, and receives approximately 50,000 summit attempts per year. The overall success rate varies sharply by route:

  • Umbwe Route (7 days): The steepest and most direct route, recommended for experienced trekkers with strong altitude acclimatisation. Success rate: ~60–70%. Price from $2,090 per person.
  • Marangu Route (8 days): The only route with hut accommodation; sometimes called the “Coca-Cola Route.” More gradual ascent but a less scenic crater approach. Price from $2,155 per person.
  • Combined Kilimanjaro Day Hike + Serengeti/Ngorongoro Safari (14 days): Combines a full summit attempt with a Tanzania wildlife circuit. Price from $4,656 per person.

Best season: January–March and June–October offer the clearest summit windows. Avoid April–May (long rains).

  1. Mount Kenya Hiking — Kenya

Mount Kenya is Africa’s second highest peak at 5,199 metres (17,057 ft). It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers technically demanding routes through alpine moorland, glacial valleys, and bamboo forests.

  • Sirimon–Chogoria Route (7 days): The most scenic traverse route on Mount Kenya. Sirimon ascent through open moorland; Chogoria descent through the dramatic Hall Tarns. Price from $885 per person — outstanding value for a technical alpine hike.
  • 12-Day Mt Kenya Hike + Lake Nakuru + Masai Mara Safari: Combines the mountain climb with a full Kenya wildlife circuit, including flamingo sightings at Lake Nakuru and Big Five game drives in the Masai Mara. Price from $2,165 per person.
  1. Horse-Riding Safaris — Kenya

Horse-riding safaris offer a perspective that no safari vehicle can replicate: you travel at the same eye level as plains game, approaching herds without the mechanical noise of a 4WD. This is not a beginner’s activity — most operators require prior riding experience.

  • 8-Day Masai Mara Horse-Riding Safari: Ride through the Masai Mara ecosystem alongside wildebeest, zebra, and giraffe. Accommodation in private tented camps. Price from $8,400 per person (all-inclusive, premium tier).
  • Other Kenya locations: Chyulu Hills (volcanic hills above Tsavo, with views of Kilimanjaro) and Laikipia Plateau (home to the highest density of wildlife outside of formal reserves in Kenya).

Best season for Masai Mara riding: July–October coincides with the Great Wildebeest Migration, when over 1.5 million wildebeest cross from Tanzania’s Serengeti into Kenya.

  1. White-Water Rafting — Kenya & Uganda

East Africa’s river systems produce some of the continent’s best white-water runs:

  • Tana River, Kenya: Offers Grade III–IV rapids on Kenya’s longest river (1,000 km), accessible from Nairobi in under 3 hours.
  • Nile River, Uganda (Jinja): Consistently rated among the top 5 white-water rafting destinations in the world, with Grade V rapids directly below the source of the White Nile. Full-day runs navigate 25+ km of rapids.

The optimal rafting period in both Kenya and Uganda is March–May and October–November, when river levels peak after rains, generating the largest and most challenging rapids. Calmer water runs are available year-round for beginners.

  1. Cycling & Mountain Biking Safaris

Cycling safaris are available in private conservancies adjacent to major parks — terrain where public roads don’t exist and standard safari vehicles rarely go. Routes traverse game corridors, dry riverbeds, and escarpment ridges.

Available in: Laikipia (Kenya), Lewa Conservancy (Kenya), and Ngorongoro Conservation Area highland tracks (Tanzania). Multi-day cycling safaris, fully supported with a vehicle, guide, and mobile camp, can be tailored on request.

  1. Zip Lining & Canopy Tours

Zip lining and elevated canopy walks are increasingly available in East Africa’s forested zones:

  • Kakamega Forest, Kenya (the only tropical rainforest in Kenya, 240 km northwest of Nairobi): Canopy walks above 30-metre-tall trees.
  • Nyungwe Forest, Rwanda: Home to a 200-metre canopy walkway and chimpanzee trekking, making it combinable with a primate safari.

Tanzania Culture & Wildlife Safari Combinations

For travellers who want adventure activity plus deep cultural immersion:

  • 10-Day Tanzania Hiking, Culture & Wildlife Safari: Includes a Kilimanjaro day hike, visits to Maasai villages near Arusha, and game drives in Tarangire and Ngorongoro. Price from $2,662 per person.
  • 10-Day Tanzania Culture & Wildlife Safari: Focuses on Hadzabe bushman encounters, Datoga tribe visits, and game drives in Serengeti and Lake Manyara. Price from $2,450 per person.
