Ruaha River LodgeRuaha River Lodge
While Ruaha is now home to many elephants, poaching has been a serious problem in the park for several decades with elephant populations decreasing from 22,000 in 1967 to 4,000 by 1987. A recent census placed the elephant population at more than 15,000. Still, poaching leaves noticeable effects. There are few mature elephants at full size and at an age of over 60 years. It is rare to see bull elephants with large tusks. Research is being done in Ruaha into whether future generations will breed small tusked elephants, or whether the large tusk gene will once again dominate the Ruaha elephant herds like it did in the past.  Dinner & overnight at Ruaha River lodge.

Day 9: Safari Activities in Ruaha National Park

Today you can set out for a full day of wildlife viewing with both morning and afternoon drives available. The type of wildlife you can see is dependent on the time of day, with local bird species the most visible (and vocal) in the morning.

The terrain in Ruaha is good for seeing predators, particularly lion and leopard. Rivers and swamps are alive with crocodiles and hippos. The dry open hillsides allow buffaloes and antelope to gather in large herds. All of these herd animals, as well as zebra and giraffe, can be watched as they make their way to the Great Ruaha River to drink. Get your species checklists ready for possible sightings of kudu, sable and roan antelope, bushbuck, and African wild dog. Ruaha is one of the few locations where both greater and lesser kudu can be seen together in one place. Dinner and overnight at Ruaha River Lodge.

Day 10: Fly from Ruaha National Park to Dar es Salaam

Leisure time at the lodge then depart to Dar es Salaam by flight, arrive in the afternoon, transfer to the airport for your flight back home.
